In November HMRC announced further details of its Strengthened Reward Scheme, following similar initiatives overseas. The scheme offers significant financial rewards for individuals who report serious tax avoidance or evasion.

Key points
- Rewards apply where your information leads to HMRC collecting at least £1.5m in tax.
- You could receive 15–30% of the tax collected (excluding interest and penalties), so even the minimum reward would be £225,000.
As HMRC state in their guidance, assessments of this level would typically involve large companies, wealthy individuals, offshore or avoidance schemes. We can therefore expect to see an increase in compliance activity in this space.
To provide some context, the IRS initially started their similar program in 2007,and over $1.3bn in rewards have been paid out in that time.
It is worth bearing in mind that members of professional bodies and financial institutions are already required by law to make disclosures to HMRC and will therefore not be entitled to these rewards.
However, with such significant sums on offer, HMRC is likely to see a sharp uptick in referrals from individuals aware of tax avoidance or evasion.
