Dan Smitten

Dan has worked in tax for over a decade. He began his career at HMRC on the Tax Specialist Programme, qualifying as an Inspector of Taxes. Over eight years, he specialised in Corporation Tax and led cross-tax enquiries into complex multinational groups, including work within the Complex Evasion Team. He also acted as technical lead for HMRC’s Mid-Sized Business Insolvency Team, advising on the interaction of insolvency procedures and tax risks, and training colleagues on investigation skills, penalties, and information powers.

In 2024, Dan moved into the private sector, where he focussed on disputes and resolutions, before joining Trident Tax in 2025.

He has managed COP8 and COP9 investigations, advised on HMRC’s information powers, and supported clients through settlement negotiations and litigation up to the Court of Appeal.

Dan has particular expertise in HMRC interventions and investigations, penalties, and insolvency-related tax risks. His experience spans enquiry strategy, dispute resolution, tribunal process, and cross-border structuring issues. He holds a Certificate of Proficiency in Insolvency (Merit) and a First Class BA in Taxation Studies from Manchester Metropolitan University, as well as a Master’s degree in Mathematics from the University of Bath.
